Description
This hands-on, practical training course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with the foundational knowledge and technical skills required to perform venepuncture (phlebotomy) safely, confidently, and in accordance with professional standards.
Participants will learn the step-by-step venepuncture procedure, from site selection and patient preparation to post-procedure care and documentation, while gaining an understanding of anatomy, infection control, and potential complications. With manikin-based practice sessions and a competency assessment, this course ensures that learners leave ready to apply their skills in real-world settings.
What You Will Learn
Understanding the Venous System – Recognise suitable veins for venepuncture (e.g., median cubital, cephalic, and basilic veins) and understand the anatomy of veins, arteries, and surrounding structures.
Equipment Identification & Use – Gain familiarity with tools used in venepuncture, including:
Tourniquets
Vacutainer systems and syringes
Butterfly needles
Sharps disposal containers
Venepuncture Procedure – Learn the correct clinical steps, including:
Patient identification and preparation
Site selection and vein palpation
Blood collection process
Aftercare and monitoring
Order of Draw – Understand the correct sequence for blood tube collection to prevent cross-contamination and ensure accurate lab results.
Infection Control & Safety – Implement universal precautions, including hand hygiene, PPE, and safe sharps disposal, to prevent infection and injury.
Complication Management – Learn to recognise and respond to issues such as:
Hematoma formation
Extravasation
Vasovagal episodes
Needlestick injuries
Legal, Ethical & Professional Responsibilities – Understand informed consent, accurate documentation, and the importance of confidentiality and NMC Code of Conduct compliance.
Communication & Patient Care – Develop techniques to comfort anxious patients, manage expectations, and maintain professional bedside manner.
